Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has confirmed that the $100,000 cash reward pledged to each member of the women’s national basketball team, D’Tigress, has been paid. In a statement on his official X account on Thursday, the president said the naira equivalent of the pledged funds had been deposited into the accounts of the players and officials.
The reward dates back to Nigeria’s fifth consecutive AfroBasket title, won in Ivory Coast in 2025. At the time, Tinubu awarded every member of the squad and backroom staff national honours, houses in Abuja and cash rewards, with $100,000 for each player and $50,000 for each official.
"Each player has received the naira equivalent of $100,000, while each official has received the equivalent of $50,000, completing their package of cash rewards, national honours and three-bedroom homes in Abuja," Tinubu said. "A promise made must be a promise kept."
D’Tigress captain Amy Okonkwo thanked Tinubu and his wife, Remi, for their continued support of the team. Tinubu also disclosed that similar cash rewards pledged to the Super Falcons after their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations victory are being finalised.
