Gabon have become the first team to qualify for the 2027 FIBA AfroCan after beating the Republic of Congo 86-58 in Douala, Cameroon. The Central African side secured their place ahead of the continental championship scheduled for Rwanda from July 2 to 11, 2027.
They join Morocco, Côte d'Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo and hosts Rwanda, who automatically qualified as semi-finalists at the 2023 edition in Angola. Rwanda finished third that year after defeating DR Congo in the bronze-medal match, while Morocco claimed the title by beating Côte d'Ivoire in the final.
Organised by the FIBA Africa Regional Office, the AfroCan is a continental tournament for national teams held every four years and contested by 12 teams split into four groups of three. Qualifying windows will run between October 2026 and June 2027 to determine the remaining spots, with the competition set to feature 28 games and teams playing between six and seven matches depending on their path to the semi-finals.
