The qualification road for the 2027 Women's AfroBasket begins in September 2026 and runs until May 2027, with seven places available across seven African zones. The top five teams from the last tournament — Nigeria, Mali, South Sudan, Senegal and Cameroon — are automatically qualified, leaving other nations to contest the remaining spots.
Zone 1 and Zone 4 have rarely attracted large fields. Zone 1's last qualifiers were in 2015, when Algeria and Morocco contested a two-team home-and-away series, with Algeria advancing. Tunisia holds the record for appearances in the final phase with 13. Zone 4, technically comprising eight countries, has defaulted into a direct two-team showdown over the past decade, with DR Congo and the Central African Republic expected to join already-qualified Cameroon.
Zone 2 features powerhouses Mali and Senegal, both already qualified. Guinea, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania, Sierra Leone and The Gambia are expected to compete. Nigeria is already through from Zone 3, with hosts Côte d'Ivoire expected to headline qualifiers. FIBA Africa has previously combined eligible participants from Zones 2 and 3 into a joint qualifying series, also involving Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Liberia, Niger and Togo.
South Sudan have secured their place in Zone 5, leaving Uganda, Egypt, Rwanda, Kenya and Burundi to compete. Tanzania, Ethiopia, Somalia and Eritrea are also expected to return, with Eritrea eyeing a debut. Zone 6 will see Angola and Mozambique battle for the main tournament place, with Zimbabwe, Zambia and South Africa also expected to participate.
It remains unclear whether Zone 7, home to Indian Ocean island nations Madagascar, Seychelles, Mauritius, Comoros and Djibouti, will hold an on-court tournament. Senegal holds the record with 26 appearances, while Angola have qualified a record 14 times through regional brackets.
