South Sudan’s women will face Egypt in Zone 5 of the AfroBasket qualifiers on Tuesday evening, beginning their campaign for a place at the continental tournament in Rwanda. Uganda hosts the qualification event in Kampala from February 14-19.
South Sudan have also been drawn against Rwanda, Uganda and reigning champions Kenya. Only one of the five teams will advance to the championship in Kigali, with the national team targeting a strong return after an earlier exit from the tournament.
The squad includes Perina Leime, Acheil Tac and Israel-based Adut Bulgak. Team manager Deng Ajou Deng said the players could use the experience gained in Kigali to build the national side’s next chapter. “Collectively, they will hopefully usher in a new era in this tournament and for women’s basketball in South Sudan,” he told FIBA.basketball.
