South Sudan recorded their first FIBA World Cup victory after beating China 89-69 in Manila, the Philippines, on Saturday.
The Bright Stars led throughout all four quarters and prevented China from overturning the result late in the game. The win followed their painful defeat to Puerto Rico and kept alive their hopes of progressing from a group containing several highly ranked nations.
South Sudan are ranked 62nd by FIBA and must now beat Serbia to remain in contention for a place in the next round. China, ranked 27th, are heading out after losses to Serbia and South Sudan, with their match against Puerto Rico unable to change the outcome.
Serbia, ranked eighth, and Puerto Rico, ranked 20th, have also won one game each and were due to meet later on Monday. Thousands watched the South Sudan victory live at Nimra Talata Basketball Court in Juba, where celebrations followed the final whistle.
