Rwanda Energy Group have shifted focus to the FIBA Africa Zone 5 Women’s Club Championship scheduled for November, after sweeping The Hoops Rwanda 4-0 in the national league playoff final. REG sealed the title with a 73-46 victory in Game 4, completing a dominant campaign and securing their place as Rwanda’s representatives at the regional tournament. At least 10 clubs have confirmed participation, including sides from Uganda, Burundi, Tanzania, Kenya, South Sudan and Rwanda, while FIBA Africa is yet to announce the host country for the 2026 qualifiers.
REG head coach Esperance Mukaneza said preparations will begin next week. “We want to win the Zone V title, and we have only a short period of two months. Of course, it will not be easy, but we have to compete,” she told Times Sport. She added that the domestic league had sharpened the squad ahead of the regional stage, noting that “the league has helped us gain valuable experience, with most of the players having played against some of the best players in the domestic league.”
REG were among two Rwandan clubs in the 2025 Zone 5 championship, alongside APR. APR won that final 82-71 to claim their first WBLA Zone 5 title. Founded in 2021 and sponsored by Rwanda Energy Group, REG have built a strong record in Rwandan women’s basketball and now target their first regional crown.
