The race for the presidency of the Nigeria Basketball Federation has taken a new turn, with an investigation indicating that a sitting governor interested in the position is lobbying his fellow governors to remove some of the expected delegates for the September 25 Congress. The congress is expected to pave the way for elections into a new NBBF board.
No date has been set for the sale of forms leading to the election, despite the mandate from world ruling body FIBA requiring a handover within a few days. The investigation found that chairmen of various state basketball associations are facing intimidation, with plans to remove them and replace them with individuals favourable to the lobbying governor ahead of the congress.
Osun State Basketball Association Chairman Engr. Opeyemi Babalola confirmed the reports, saying some individuals are using the state's Deputy Governor, Prince Kola Adewusi, to pressure him to step down. Babalola, popularly known as Webber, described the situation as unfortunate, adding that the upcoming election is already turning into full-blown politics.
