Dr Abdullahi Mustapha has formally declared his candidacy for the Nigeria Basketball Federation presidency, unveiling a 100-day action plan he calls the "New Dawn" agenda. The announcement came on Wednesday, October 7, in Abuja, ahead of the NBBF elective congress scheduled for October 15, 2026.

Mustapha framed the vote as a turning point for the sport in Africa's most populous nation. "I believe Nigerian basketball has enormous potential, but that potential must now be matched with a stronger institution, sustainable investment, professional administration and a clear development pathway," he said.

The agenda proposes a coordinated schools competition, regional talent centres and a national identification and player-tracking system, alongside a structured pathway linking schools, academies, clubs, leagues and national teams. Mustapha also pledged to restore domestic competitions through predictable calendars, club licensing, better contracts, upgraded venues and improved broadcasting.

He promised investment in coaches, referees, statisticians, physiotherapists and team managers through certification and international exposure. "Nigerian players should not have to remain inactive for long periods simply because our domestic system is unable to provide regular competition," he said, urging delegates to back his programme so Nigerian basketball can move "from potential to podium."
