Newly appointed Dallas Mavericks president Masai Ujiri has placed his trust in Kyrie Irving to drive the franchise forward, brushing aside trade enquiries from rival teams. The nine-time All-Star returned to the court in pre-season action against the Houston Rockets after more than 18 months away, posting 17 points and 3 assists to ease concerns about his fitness.

Several clubs, including the Detroit Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves, had reportedly probed the Mavericks about Irving's availability. Dallas moved to shut those approaches down.

Ujiri, who took over the presidency this summer, said on the Hoop Collective podcast that Irving remains central to his plans. "We truly believe in Kyrie as a player. We are convinced he can succeed within our team," the executive said, citing a comment by Kevin Durant. Ujiri added that Irving "sows chaos in opposing defences" and creates space for his teammates.

The guard is also expected to help the development of the club's young core, built around Cooper Flagg. Ujiri said he was confident the side could grow collectively under coach Dusty May, and stressed Irving's presence would "make things much easier for several players" on the roster.
