Mali pulled off the first stunner of the Women's Basketball World Cup by shocking Spain 82-73 in Berlin on Saturday. It was only the second win ever in tournament history for the African country, which beat Senegal in overtime in 2010.
Mali took control with a 31-19 third quarter, surging on a 16-4 run that included two 3-pointers from Sika Kone. The forward finished with 19 points and struck again from beyond the arc on Mali's first five points of the fourth quarter to put the game away.
Spain pulled no closer than nine the rest of the way. Mali improved to 1-1 in the group stage.
Saturday's other results saw host Germany, France and Hungary also record victories at the tournament.
