Lucky Abubakar Aliyu has been elected as the players' representative on the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) board, winning the vote held in Abuja ahead of the federation's elective congress on October 15.

The former basketball player will speak for both active and retired athletes on the incoming board, a role that goes beyond supporting the NBBF's administrative programmes. Following his election, Aliyu identified grassroots development and opportunities for young players as priorities for his tenure.

His appointment comes as questions around domestic competitions, player welfare and development pathways continue to shape debates about Nigerian basketball. Active players stand to gain a platform to raise concerns over training and competition conditions, while retired athletes can contribute through mentoring and coaching development.

The election coincides with a wider leadership transition. The NBBF will install a new executive board for the 2026–2030 tenure, with several candidates competing to set the federation's direction.

Having secured his seat, Aliyu now faces the task of translating players' concerns into practical outcomes during a four-year cycle that will define the next phase of Nigerian basketball governance.
