Nigeria attracted more than ₦50 billion in private-sector sports investment in 2025, as investors responded to growing demand for African sport and entertainment. Helios Investment Partners is among those targeting the sector through Helios Sports & Entertainment Group.
HSEG develops businesses across sports intellectual property, talent, entertainment, venues and arenas. Its portfolio includes PFL Africa, NBA Africa, Zaria Group and The Malachite Group.
PFL Africa was established in 2024 as a joint venture with the Professional Fighters League. The platform aims to develop African mixed martial arts talent, expand local audiences and provide opportunities to compete internationally.
In June 2026, PFL Africa held its first Nigerian event at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos. Eight Nigerian fighters appeared, including Wasi Adeshina and Patrick Ocheme, in an event described as the largest mixed martial arts event in West African history.
Helios co-founder Tope Lawani said the group combines capital with industry expertise across Africa’s sports and creative industries, from supporting start-ups to providing growth capital for established businesses. Africa’s sports economy is projected to reach $20 billion by 2035.
