D’Tigers head coach David Fizdale has revealed that 14 NBA players holding Nigerian connections have responded enthusiastically to his recruitment push, with two already committing subject to international eligibility. The former Memphis Grizzlies and New York Knicks coach, appointed in May, said the response reflects the scale of talent available to Nigeria as the programme targets a return to elite competition after missing the Paris 2024 Olympics.

"I've spoken to 14 NBA players that are not currently eligible but have deep Nigerian connections, and I've gotten a ton of excitement. I got two commitments," Fizdale said. He identified the 2027 FIBA World Cup and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics as the twin objectives shaping his recruitment drive. Nigeria’s recent qualifying squad already featured NBA guard Josh Okogie alongside Chima Moneke, Chimezie Metu, Udoka Azubuike and other established internationals.

The Olympic target carries a personal resonance. Los Angeles is Fizdale’s hometown, where he grew up inspired by the 1984 Games. "We have to make getting to Los Angeles our mission. That is my ultimate goal, to get this team to those Olympics. And not just get there. I want to win," he said.

FIBA has confirmed that the 2027 World Cup will directly qualify seven nations for LA 2028, with additional berths available through Olympic qualifying tournaments. D’Tigers have appeared at three Olympics — London 2012, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 — but are yet to claim an Olympic basketball medal.
