Players and officials of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu after receiving the financial rewards promised for winning the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket tournament. The payments complete the presidential rewards package announced after the team’s continental triumph.
The National Sports Commission said the funds were released within three days of arrangements being finalised by NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko and the Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele. Both D’Tigress and the Super Falcons have now received their payments.
Speaking on behalf of the squad, captain Amy Okonkwo thanked Tinubu for what she called an unprecedented gesture. She confirmed that players had already received the houses and national honours pledged earlier, with the cash component now credited to their accounts.
D’Tigress are the reigning queens of African women’s basketball, having won the 2025 title in Abidjan with a 78-64 victory over Mali in the final. The win secured a seventh continental crown, a 29-match unbeaten run in the competition, and a record fifth straight Women’s AfroBasket title.
