Bilal Coulibaly's place at the Washington Wizards is under fresh scrutiny after the French forward began a regular-season game on the bench for the first time in his last 115 outings, in a victory over the New York Knicks. Coulibaly finished with 2 points on 1-of-7 shooting and 5 rebounds in 19 minutes, with competition now including newcomers Anthony Davis, AJ Dybantsa and Trae Young.

Washington's reshuffle saw the first pick of the 2026 Draft and Kyshawn George start on the wings, while the anticipated return of Alex Sarr is set to give the team two established big men. "We're still early in camp. We're trying different combinations to see what works. Rotation decisions haven't been made yet," head coach Brian Keefe said.

The timing is significant for Coulibaly, who is eligible for a contract extension until 19 October. Without an agreement he would become a protected free agent in summer 2027, and his defence remains his strongest asset while offensive limitations weigh on negotiations. The 22-year-old worked on his shooting mechanics during the off-season and explained: "I had a little pause at the top of my motion and I tried to change it," describing daily repetition as part of his routine.

Coulibaly played down the prospect of new arrivals cutting into his role, praising Dybantsa as "very mature, knows his game, has a big offensive range and can score in any situation," and calling Davis "a champion" with vast experience. The challenge for Coulibaly is now to secure his place inside a Washington group that no longer focuses solely on player development.
