A leading figure in Nigerian basketball has raised allegations of interference ahead of elections by a state branch of the Nigeria Basketball Federation. Mark claimed that a telephone call was made by his Deputy Governor to the Director of Sports, requesting the removal of his name and that of Col. Sam Ahmedu from a list of candidates.
According to Mark, the request was traced to a top government official who wanted the change implemented in order to "electrify 3 villages in my state." The allegation points to political pressure within state-level basketball administration.
Mark has called on the National Sports Commission and the Nigeria Olympic Committee to intervene and ensure a level playing field for all stakeholders ahead of the polls. He warned that basketball in Nigeria will continue to suffer if credible elections are not conducted.
