Two fancied sides, Cameroon and Côte d'Ivoire, were beaten on the final day of the first round in Groups E and F. The results left the standings open across both groups heading into the next window.
The African Zone qualifiers are played across multiple windows spread over the qualifying cycle, with 12 teams split into groups competing for the continent's five spots at the World Cup. The identity of the five African representatives for Qatar 2027 will be confirmed when qualifying concludes in February 2027.
