Basketball South Africa has formally rejected the Basketball National League's selection of the Soweto Panthers as South Africa's representative for the Road to the Basketball Africa League 2027, insisting instead that the Johannesburg Giants are the legitimate national champions.

The dispute follows a BNL statement issued on 15 October 2026, announcing the Soweto Panthers as the country's representatives after they were crowned 2026 BNL champions. BSA described the appointment as "irregular" and "procedurally flawed", arguing that it raised concerns about procedural fairness, transparency and compliance with FIBA regulations.

BSA said the Johannesburg Giants won the federation's official national club championships and that their confirmation had already been submitted to the FIBA Africa Competitions office without objection. The federation stated it would lodge a formal objection and appeal with the FIBA Africa Central Board and FIBA headquarters in Switzerland, seeking urgent intervention.

The controversy compounds wider governance concerns in South African basketball. Earlier in 2026, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, FIBA Africa and SASCOC launched a process to address governance challenges and establish a properly led national federation. Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie held engagements with stakeholders, while FIBA Africa appointed a board member to provide oversight.

Documents seen by EWN Sport also highlight a contractual breakdown between BSA and the BNL. In a letter dated 10 June 2024, BSA president Sanele Mthiyane notified BNL chairman Dr Albert Mokoena that the licensing agreement, originally signed on 21 October 2013, would not be renewed, stating that the contractual relationship had ended on 30 September 2023.
