Nneka Ogwumike has become the fourth player in WNBA history to score 8,000 career points, extending her record of milestones with the Los Angeles Sparks. The forward, a first-generation Nigerian-American and Texas native, reached the mark to strengthen her standing among the league's leading scorers.
Ogwumike was selected first overall by the Sparks in the 2012 WNBA Draft and went on to win the league's Most Valuable Player award in 2016 along with a championship. A Stanford graduate in psychology, she led the Cardinal to four consecutive Final Four appearances and won the Wade Trophy three times, while also earning a Wooden Award finalist nod and Pac-10 Player of the Year honours. She claimed gold with the United States at the 2011 Basketball World University Games.
The eldest of four sisters who played Division I basketball, Ogwumike has also served as president of the WNBA Players Association and worked on advocacy for equality, opportunity, women's empowerment, health and wellness.
