Arizona men's basketball forward Mabil Mawut has delivered more than 300 pairs of donated shoes from Tucson to a basketball camp run by his Children of the Nile charity in Bor Town, South Sudan. Mawut collected the shoes before the UA football spring game and arranged for them to reach the camp, which drew more than 250 participants.
More than 85 campers received shoes transported by a family of six travelling from Tucson to Kenya. According to the Arizona Daily Star, an Alaska Airlines manager allowed the family to check a bag full of shoes free of charge after learning of the charity effort.
Mawut called the camp "a great success" in a text message. A native of Bor Town, he is now organising the shipment of donated underwear and sanitary items collected in an August drive at Z-Street to the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya, where he was born.
Children of the Nile is overseeing both projects, linking Tucson donors with communities in South Sudan and Kenya.
