Atlanta Dream rookie Madina Okot received a visit from Kenyan President William Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto after the Dream closed their regular season with an 83-65 victory over the New York Liberty on Wednesday. Ruto was in New York City to attend the United Nations General Assembly and watched the game alongside NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatu and members of NBA Africa.
Okot, 22, met the President and First Lady at courtside. The clip showed Ruto, Rachel and Okot sharing a hug before a courtside conversation and a selfie. "That was a very good honor, I appreciate him showing up. I'm the only Kenyan over here and it just shows how much he supports sports at home," Okot told The Associated Press. She added: "I got to talk some Swahili today. So happy I spoke Swahili to my President and the First Lady."
The Dream secured the fourth seed with back-to-back wins over New York, finishing with 30 victories. Okot, drafted 13th overall by Atlanta, produced two points and two rebounds in three minutes against the Liberty and is averaging 5.4 points and 3.3 rebounds in her first professional season.
