Jonathan Kuminga is joining the Minnesota Timberwolves on a two-year, $12.4 million contract with a 2027-28 player option, choosing the Wolves over the Chicago Bulls. According to a source cited by reporters, the Bulls would not promise Kuminga he would start or close games most nights, given that several of Chicago's most coveted young talents also play forward.
Kuminga, 23, spent his first four-plus seasons with the Golden State Warriors, who selected him seventh overall in 2021. Golden State traded him to the Atlanta Hawks last February. He averaged 12.2 points on 46.3% shooting, 5.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 36 games last season, a campaign interrupted by a bone bruise and a hyperextended left knee, and a December stretch in which the Warriors removed him from the rotation.
His agent, Aaron Turner, said the shorter deal positions Kuminga for a larger contract in the 2027 free-agent market. The Congolese forward is expected to see significant minutes in Minnesota following the trade of Julius Randle to the Brooklyn Nets.
