The Atlanta Hawks are waiving guard Devin Carter, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer, ending his brief stint with the franchise less than three months after acquiring him from the Sacramento Kings. Carter, the No. 13 overall pick in the 2024 draft, never played a regular-season game for Atlanta.
The Hawks landed Carter and a 2033 second-round pick on June 30 in exchange for the draft rights to Alpha Kaba. Atlanta would remain responsible for Carter's approximate $5.2 million salary if no team claims him. The move trims Atlanta's roster from 16 players on guaranteed contracts to 15, the regular-season maximum.
Carter becomes the third former lottery pick Atlanta has parted with this offseason. The Hawks traded Zaccharie Risacher, the No. 1 pick in 2024, to the Dallas Mavericks in a three-team deal that brought Lu Dort and Ryan Nembhard to Atlanta. They also declined Jonathan Kuminga's $24.3 million team option in June, sending him to unrestricted free agency; he later signed a two-year deal with Minnesota. In 16 regular-season games for the Hawks, Kuminga averaged 12.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists on 47.6% shooting.
The 24-year-old Carter averaged 8.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 38 games with Sacramento last season, but shot 26.3% from three-point range.
