The Basketball Africa League has unveiled six newly refurbished basketball courts across Côte d'Ivoire, Nigeria and Senegal, supporting NBA Africa's pledge to build or renovate 1,000 courts on the continent over the next decade. The league said the facilities are expected to reach thousands of youth and community members annually.
The first two courts opened in Saint-Louis, Senegal on 30 September in partnership with PETROSEN, and in Abidjan on 3 October with Wave Côte d'Ivoire. Additional launches are scheduled through December in Joal and Guédiawaye in Senegal, Dakar, and Owerri in Nigeria.
The Saint-Louis court sits at Université Gaston Berger, a UNESCO World Heritage site. In Abidjan's Koumassi district, the renovated court at Groupe Scolaire Lac is expected to serve nearly 3,000 players weekly and host a development programme for 300 girls aged 18 and under, alongside a Saturday youth league.
The Guédiawaye facility is the first BAL4HER court in Africa, dedicated to advancing women and girls in basketball, while the Owerri court will be the second. Each site features upgraded playing surfaces, spectator seating and new stanchions, with select locations adding lighting, changing rooms and sanitation.
"These newly refurbished courts reflect our commitment to investing in communities and making the game more accessible to young people across Africa," said BAL President Amadou Gallo Fall.
