Two professional basketball players have died and a third is unconscious after a serious traffic accident on the highway near the HLM health centre in Dakar, according to the Dakar central police's accident investigation unit.
The vehicle, a Hyundai Elantra, was driven by D. Ndoye, a 24-year-old basketball player. Police said he was travelling from the Bop basketball court towards the Hann Bridge when the car skidded near the social housing health post, overturned and split in two under the force of the impact.
The two passengers, Mouhamed Diouf, 27, and Momar Marigo, 29, both of whom played for Ville de Dakar, died instantly. Ndoye, a player at Customs, was found unconscious after the crash. Police have launched an investigation to determine the precise causes of the skid.
The accident has shaken Senegalese basketball, with the country still waiting for further details on the circumstances that led to the fatal overturn.
