President Bola Tinubu on Thursday redeemed the Federal Government's pledge to compensate D’Tigress, Nigeria's women's basketball team, for winning the 2025 FIBA Women's AfroBasket in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire on August 3, 2025. During a State House reception in Abuja on August 4, 2025, Tinubu had pledged $100,000, a three-bedroom apartment and the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger to each player.
In a post on his verified X handle, @officialABAT, the President confirmed that each player has received the naira equivalent of $100,000, while each official has received the equivalent of $50,000, completing the package of cash rewards, national honours and three-bedroom homes in Abuja. Tinubu described it as the first time a Federal Government has fulfilled presidential sporting rewards of that scale in full within one year.
Tinubu added that the Federal Government is finalising payment of outstanding cash rewards to the Super Falcons, the senior women's football team. He noted that Super Falcons players and officials have already received title documents to their house allocations and National Honours certificates, and that houses and national honours promised to Super Eagles players have also been redeemed. "Our athletes who bring honour to Nigeria deserve more than applause. They deserve a country that keeps its word," Tinubu wrote.
