FIBA Africa has formally confirmed Soweto Panthers Basketball Club as South Africa's representative for the Road to BAL 2027 qualification cycle. The registration follows the Soweto club's triumph as 2026 Basketball National League (BNL) Champions and ends a process of engagement between the BNL, FIBA Africa and South African sport authorities.

The confirmation secures South Africa's champion club a place in the qualification pathway for the Basketball Africa League. BNL Chairman Dr Albert Sepatake Mokoena said the outcome ensures South Africa's club side can compete for a spot in Africa's premier professional club competition.

Founded in Meadowlands, Soweto, in 1986, the Panthers have built a four-decade record of competitive play and youth development. The BNL acknowledged FIBA Africa Executive Director Julien Farran for his role in the process, alongside South Africa's Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture.

Participation remains subject to compliance with FIBA Africa's sporting, eligibility, administrative, financial and regulatory requirements. The BNL has begun talks with commercial and strategic partners to support Soweto Panthers' campaign.
