Nigeria Basketball Federation president Ahmadu Musa Kida has declared he will not pursue a third term in office, using the federation’s Extraordinary Congress in Yola to urge aspirants to conduct themselves with honour ahead of the October 15, 2026 elective congress in Abuja. The meeting drew 39 delegates from across Nigeria’s basketball community.
Kida dismissed speculation that he intended to circumvent the NBBF constitution to extend his tenure. “Contrary to news making the rounds about my ambitions, I have never been part of subverting the NBBF-approved constitution in seeking a third term,” he said. “I intend to ensure a free, fair and transparent election to the next Board for 2026 to 2030.”
The congress approved a schedule that places elections for technical representatives, players representatives and other affiliate bodies between October 7 and 14, 2026, also in Abuja. Kida also commended National Sports Commission leaders Mallam Shehu Dikko and director general Bukola Olopade for their support of Nigerian basketball.
A seven-member electoral committee was constituted, chaired by Dr Lanre Glover with Femi Olugbile, Alhaji Sani Fema, Engineer Priscilla Ngozi Iroaganachi, Major General David Lubo and Mallam Farouk Yarma as members, while Barrister Ichene Kalu will serve as secretary. A three-member elections appeals committee was also approved, led by Barrister Emmanuel Okibe with Ms Chichi Nwoko and Mr Emmanuel Zira.
