Defending champions Nairobi City Thunder stand one victory away from retaining their National Men's Basketball Premier League title after taking a 2-0 lead over Kenya Ports Authority in the best-of-five final series. Thunder followed up a 78-67 win in Game One on Saturday with a 73-63 victory at Makande Gymnasium in Mombasa on Sunday.
KPA fought back from an 8-point first-quarter deficit to lead 52-51 heading into the final period, with the teams tied at 56-56 and 60-60 during the fourth quarter. Thunder then pulled away in the closing stages to seal the result.
Derrick Ogechi and captain Tylor Ongwae led Thunder with 20 points each, while Eugene Adera added 11. Ogechi proved decisive after returning from an eye injury, scoring six straight points, including back-to-back three-pointers, to push Thunder from 67-63 to a double-digit cushion. Trevor Opiyo top-scored for KPA with 13 points, followed by Tobias Odhiambo with 11 and Cedrick Tsangue with 10.
Thunder return to Nairobi for Game Three on October 2, where they can clinch a third consecutive league title and extend an unbeaten run that stretches back to 2023. Games Four and Five, if required, are yet to be confirmed.
