The FIBA AfroBasket 2025 tipped off on 12 August in Angola, bringing together the continent's 16 top-ranked national teams. Matches are split between Luanda and Moçâmedes, with the group winners advancing directly to the quarter-finals and the second- and third-placed sides contesting a qualification round to fill the remaining places. Last-placed teams are eliminated.

Angola enters as host and record holder with 11 continental titles, aiming to use the home crowd to reclaim past glory. Defending champions Tunisia are determined to retain their crown, drawing on their reputation for discipline and tactical structure.

Nigeria, led by Houston Rockets player Josh Okogie, are considered another favourite, with a roster noted for its physicality, size and top-level experience across European leagues. South Sudan also draw attention after recent breakthroughs, including their appearance at the Paris Olympics, and are chasing an historic result at the continental championship.

The tournament, which began in 1962, continues to serve as a showcase for emerging African talent on the world stage.
