Former D’Tigers player Ejike Ugboaja has declared his intention to contest the presidency of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, calling for a fair and transparent election as the federation prepares for a leadership change.
Ugboaja formally announced his candidacy on Thursday and criticised the way stakeholders are being informed about the electoral process. “How can you organise a congress without properly communicating with some of the biggest stakeholders?” he said, adding that those who have invested in Nigerian basketball deserve a voice in decisions affecting the sport.
He also raised concerns over reported changes to some state basketball associations ahead of the vote, warning that such moves could compromise the integrity of the contest. “My position is simple: we need a fair election,” Ugboaja said.
The NBBF has scheduled its elective congress for October 15, 2026, in Abuja, when a new administration will be chosen to take over once the current board’s tenure ends.
