Congolese guard Ben Shungu produced his best performance of the season as Latvia's Rigas Zelli opened their EuroCup campaign with an 86-84 home win over Italy's Tortona on the first day of the competition, the third-ranked European club tournament behind the EuroLeague and the Champions League.
Shungu finished with 23 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists, his third appearance since arriving at the club after two league matches. The outing marks his strongest showing since joining Rigas Zelli, having ended the second half of last season at Krosno in Poland.
In May, the DR Congo Basketball Federation announced that the former University of Vermont player had agreed to join the national team for the 2027 World Cup qualifiers. The Léopards have since played two qualifying windows with no update on his availability.
Rigas Zelli will face Rostock in Germany on October 6 for their second EuroCup fixture, before returning to domestic action to host Ogre, aiming for a third consecutive league win.
