The Basketball Africa League has announced the renovation of six basketball courts across Africa, including four in Senegal, under NBA Africa's programme to build or refurbish 1,000 courts on the continent over the next decade. The Senegalese sites are in Saint-Louis, Joal, Dakar and Guédiawaye.
The first court was inaugurated on 30 September at Gaston Berger University in Saint-Louis. In Joal, on the Petite Côte, a renovated court will serve the local fishing community. In Dakar, a court equipped with a new scoreboard and fencing was inaugurated in partnership with the City of Dakar, followed by the final of the BAL City Run, a neighbourhood tournament involving 12 local teams.
On 30 October, Guédiawaye will host the first BAL4HER sports field in Africa, an indoor complex designed for basketball, volleyball and handball, with renovated locker rooms and spaces for workshops on leadership, health and nutrition. The project is backed by Chiney Ogwumike, a two-time WNBA All-Star and BAL ambassador, through her organisation Queens of the Continent.
In Côte d'Ivoire, a renovated court at the Lac school complex in Abidjan's Koumassi district is expected to host around 3,000 players per week, including 2,500 students, alongside a programme for 300 girls aged 18 and under from eight schools. A second BAL4HER court is scheduled to open in December in Owerri, Nigeria. Upgrades across the six sites include new playing surfaces, hoops, spectator areas and, at some venues, renovated locker rooms, restrooms and lighting. The BAL, based in Dakar, brings together 12 African clubs and completed its sixth season in May 2026.
