Chris Kent, a northeast Indiana native who played at Angola High School, has been named head coach of the Austin Spurs, the G League affiliate of the San Antonio Spurs. Kent is entering his first season leading the Austin franchise after working his way up the coaching ranks over more than a decade.
Kent graduated from Angola High School in 2009 and played college basketball at Huntington University for two seasons before finishing his playing career at Trine University. He began his coaching career as an assistant with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants from 2013-15, then joined Florida State University as a graduate assistant for the Seminoles from 2015-17.
After one season as Director of Player Development at the University of South Florida, Kent reached the NBA with the Chicago Bulls, serving as a coaching intern during the 2018-19 season and later being promoted to video coordinator. He moved to the G League as an assistant with the Windy City Bulls for the 2022-23 season, then worked as an assistant for the Rip City Remix, Portland's affiliate, from 2023-25.
Kent spent last season as Director of Player Development at Florida State before landing the Austin head coaching job. He played all four years of high school basketball at Angola under head coach Greg Holmes and credits his Indiana upbringing for shaping his love of the game.
The Austin Spurs open the G League season on the road at the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Friday, November 6, with their home opener set for Sunday, Nov. 8 at the H-E-B Center at Cedar Park against the Laketown Squadron. Austin, based in the G League's Western Conference, is not scheduled to face the Noblesville Boom during the upcoming regular season.
